Ballistas weren't the most accurate of siege weaponry but I'd think if anyone got hit by a 4ft long machine propelled pointy arrow they'd be fairly unlikely to be around to talk about it afterwards! So two hits rather than one from a ballista doesn't seem so unbalanced to me, particularly as these Iron Age horsemen aren't exactly covered head to foot in armour. Perhaps we need to look more at our armies set up our own strategies for going into a battle and use of terrain on the battle map rather than say things are unbalanced. In fact in most bronze age warfare horses may well of been ridden to the battlefield but more often than not the fighters would dismount when in position and fight on foot. Cavalry have never been particularly useful when facing a long pointy spears, unless firing arrows at them from distance and retreating where and when necessary to avoid close hand to hand combat. As SacredFool says it is only Iron Age cavalry, no stirrups no saddles for starters!Įarly cavalry weren't that effective and were used mostly for chasing down fleeing enemy troops more than a force of their own.

I can't help thinking that the way it currently is set up is fairly historically accurate, in so far that a game can be.
